What's the Deal with Fae Anyway?

I love the concept of Fairies,  I do. But when it comes to reading about Fae? I. Can't. Even.

Are Fae and Fairies even the same thing? Maybe my previously conceived notions about them are way off base. Every time I go to read about Fae my mind automatically defaults to Tinkerbell and Pixie Hollow. (Now, THAT'S A BOOK I WOULD READ!)

I've tried, y'all. I've tried SO HARD.

The Iron Fey series was SO popular, I read through book two and then lost interest. A Court of Thorns and Roses? Soooo boring, I skipped to the sexy scenes (not even afraid to admit that). Wicked Lovely, a no go. Need, I needed to stop reading. Glimmerglass, The Faerie Ring, Wings, Wondrous Strange--nothing could hold my interest.

Glimmerglass (Faeriewalker, #1)Need (Need, #1)A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1)The Iron King (The Iron Fey, #1)

I'm in need of a Fae(?!) Fey(!?) Fairy(!?) expert!

What am I doing wrong!? Is there an END ALL, BE ALL book about fairies that will convert me? I feel like I'm missing a HUGE genre with good stories but...then again, maybe Fae just aren't for me??

Disney Fairies own my heart and I think that may be the stem of my problem. If loving Tink and her pals is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Any thoughts? Is there a creature or genre you have trouble connecting with? Sound off in the comments!

  1. I've read a few I've liked but, in general, the Fae don't work for me either. Especially in series because they are SO tricky that nothing is true or real so why bother? lol

I get the appeal but for me, I just get annoyed and don't want to figure out what it all means. I would be the worst with the fae....just kill me because I'm not playing games - you are annoying lol

I'm also not a big fantasy reader so all the courts and intrigue don't appeal to me either.

So far I've liked Holly Black's stand alone - The Darkest Part of the Forest but that had more of a fairy tale feel than straight up fae. I did read The Cruel Prince and that was okay for me but I can see book #2 is going to have all the things that piss me off so I probably won't continue.

  2. Yes! Fae are annoying little tricksters and i can't handle them. Too many riddles and convoluted storylines!

I may check out that stand alone though, I'm all about the fairytale feel just not BAM straight up in your face fae.

  3. Girrlll I'm the opposite. I'm such fae trash right now. I love the idea of deception and and beautiful faces that cause damage. I think a lot of books are trying to separate fae from pixies now.

  5. I love Fae in any shape or form, however I didn't like the book you read either. :) (I was starting to think I was the only person on Earth, who doesn't like Court of Throne and Roses). I might suggest more Urban fantasy books, where Fae and just tiny part of the story (like Relentless) or whole another take on the subject with trolls(I'm sure they are really Fae :D) (like Stolen Songbird)

  6. Seems like Fae just aren't for you. If you love Disney fairies, then that's just fine. Stick to them! :-)
