Two days before the start of her junior year, seventeen-year-old Janelle Tenner is hit by a pickup truck and killed—as in blinding light, scenes of her life flashing before her, and then nothing. Except the next thing she knows, she's opening her eyes to find Ben Michaels, a loner from her high school whom Janelle has never talked to, leaning over her. And even though it isn't possible, she knows—with every fiber of her being—that Ben has somehow brought her back to life.
But her revival, and Ben's possible role in it, is only the first of the puzzles that Janelle must solve. While snooping in her FBI agent father's files for clues about her accident, she uncovers a clock that seems to be counting down to something—but to what? And when someone close to Janelle is killed, she can no longer deny what's right in front of her: Everything that's happened—the accident, the murder, the countdown clock, Ben's sudden appearance in her life—points to the end of life as she knows it. And as the clock ticks down, she realizes that if she wants to put a stop to the end of the world, she's going to need to uncover Ben's secrets—and keep from falling in love with him in the process.
From debut author Elizabeth Norris comes this shattering novel of one girl's fight to save herself, her world, and the boy she never saw coming.~Goodreads
Unraveling is an awesome debut that I really enjoyed! The main character, Janelle, is one tough chick! Not in a kick-ass-blade-swishing-bullet-blazing kind of way but more in a take-care-of-business-protect-those-she-loves kind of way. She’s very unselfish and she puts her baby brother, Jared, (who’s actually a freshman...so technically I could still date him...hmm) before herself multiple times and I really admired that about her. Janelle and Jared’s home life isn’t exactly the best either. With their mom being bi-polar and their dad being part of the FBI, Janelle and Jared kind of have to fend for themselves. Their relationship is one of the strongest/cutest brother/sister relationships I’ve ever read about! Just the little moments between them, like Janelle fluffing his hair or asking if he was hungry, were my favorites!
At the very beginning of the novel Janelle is kind of just going through the motions—taking care of her brother, working as a lifeguard and sorta dating a boy she’s not even that in to. And then BAM! She gets hit by a truck. No—seriously, she does. And the first person she sees when she opens her eyes is Mr. Ben Michaels. *swoon*
Ben is the bad-boy/rebel/outcast who hangs out with other stoners at Janelle’s school. But something about him is…off. So Janelle becomes obsessed with figuring out who Ben Michaels is and I enjoyed every second of it! They were angsty and adorable. I mean how cute is it that he hacks into the school’s database to switch around her schedule so she gets into the classes she wants!? Pretty cute!
So Janelle and Ben team up and try to figure out this MAJOR thing that’s going on throughout the whole story. Oh yeah, and they only have a certain amount of time to solve the problem before WAVE FUNCTION COLLAPSE! (To find out what Wave Function Collapse is, please visit your local Interverse Agency or pick up Unraveling in April.)
Overall, Unraveling is a fast paced Sci-fi/ end of the world romance mash-up that’ll keep you on edge until the last possible paragraph! And with an ending like THAT...i'm hoping for a sequel!
