Top Ten Tuesday: The Dreaded DNF

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

June 5: Books I Decided to DNF (did not finish) too Quickly.

I try to read at least 75-100 pages of a book before moving on to something else. The first 5 books below are stories where I didn't connect to any of the characters (Star-Touched), the plot was too slow-paced (SoC, Star-Touched), or they weren't meeting expectations (Crown's Fate- I LOVED book #1 but #2 wasn't doing it for me). Song of the Current and Dualed just didn't hold my attention. BUT! I really want to retry Song of the Current, I've heard great things!

Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)The Crown's Fate (The Crown's Game, #2)Song of the Current (Song of the Current #1)Dualed (Dualed, #1)The Star-Touched Queen (The Star-Touched Queen, #1)

I'm very much a habitual book starter. I'll read 10-20 pages and then move on if the story doesn't immediately grab me. I probably chose to DNF the next 5 books too quickly.

Daughter of the Burning CityNevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle, #1)The Way You Make Me FeelFirstsThe Upside of Unrequited

I've started and re-started Daughter of the Burning City so many times, I think that one just may not be for me. I definitely plan on giving Firsts and Upside another chance somewhere down the line!

What are some books you've stamped with DNF?

  1. I've heard good things about Daughter of the Burning City. I grabbed it on sale a few weeks back for my Kindle. I have SUCH a hard time DNF'ing books. I'm trying to be better about it though and not waste too much time.

    1. I hope you end up loving Daughter!! I would always feel bad about DNF'ing but now, just like you said, i dont want to waste time on a book I'm not enjoying!

  3. I did love SoC's but I've been reading the second book for almost a year lol. I should surrender but I bought the boxed set and can't give up yet.

I didn't like Nevernight or The Way You Make Me Feel too much (but I did LOVE the father in TWYMMF) and the Upside was cute but if you weren't connecting better to let it go.

Have you read Love, Simon yet? I think you might like that one more.

I'm horrible at DNF'ing though. If I even connect to one character, I have to see what happens but I'll usually skim and have the book done in 20 minutes lol

    1. Ok ok ok....i'm definitely adding SoC back to the list...because it DOES seem like a great story but damn that slow build!

I need to read Simon and Upside i want too!! But other books were calling my name. I think DNF'ing goes hand in hand with being a feeler reader.

  4. I really liked Six of Crows, but yes, it is a slow starter. I also enjoyed Daughter of The Burning City but can see how it might not be for everyone. And yes, The Crown's Fate was such a disappointment.

  5. SoC was a solid 5-star read for me. I fell in love with Bardugo's writing, and I am a hardcore contemporary reader. Upside was a solid 4 stars for me. I really liked the main character a lot. There were little things that bugged in in The Way You Make Me Feel, but overall, I enjoyed the book. I loved the romantic interest, and Goo seems to be an expert at writing great father-daughter relationships.

  6. I've heard a lot of good things about some of the books--like The Way You Make Me Feel--but taste is always subjective and I feel like if you're not enjoying something, it's probably either (1) Not your time for that book. or (2) Just not your cup of tea. Great list, though!

    1. Totally agree with it just not being the time for a certain book!
