So Close to You by Rachel Carter

So Close to You (So Close to You, #1)
So Close to You
Author: Rachel Carter
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 320
Rating: 4 Stars!
Lydia Bentley has heard stories about the Montauk Project all her life: stories about the experiments that took place at the abandoned military base near her home and the people who’ve disappeared over the years. When she stumbles into a vessel that transports her to a dangerous and strange new reality, Lydia realizes that all the stories she’s ever heard about the Montauk Project are true—and that she’s in the middle of one of the most dangerous experiments in history.

Alongside Wes, a darkly mysterious boy whom she is wary to trust, Lydia begins to unravel the secrets surrounding the project. But the truths behind these secrets force her to question all her choices. And if Lydia chooses wrong, she might not save her family but destroy them... and herself.~Goodreads
PSA: After reading this book I have come to the conclusion that I was born in the wrong time period. And, I need to find a boy that will travel back to the flapper days with me. If you happen to know an adorably cute and caring guy, who has access to a time machine, please send him my way. Thanks.

GUYS! I was super confused and anxious for over half of this book, but in a good way!? AND GUYS!  It was action-y and romance-y and mystery-y!? (Yeah that’s not a word. But still!) IT WAS SO GOOD!

The book starts off with the main character, Lydia, at home with her mom, dad and grandfather in Long Island. Ever since she was little her grandfather has told her stories about the Montauk Project and how it’s this huge government conspiracy. The reason he’s so obsessed with the Project is because his father was involved with it and eventually disappeared. Lydia is the only one that really listens to her grandfather and his theories. After Lydia’s grandfather all but drags her to the area that he believes holds the answers, her whole world changes. One afternoon, EVERYTHING CHANGES for her! EVERY.SINGLE. THING.

She literally stumbles in to the past; 1944 to be exact!  And the people she stumbles upon in 1944? Her family! Her great-great grandfather, who is a Doctor that volunteers at a military base and her grandfather’s sister, Mary, that volunteers as a nurse. To them, it looks as though this girl is  seriously lost and they can’t take care of her fast enough! They even invite her to stay with them. Her relatives are very, very nice. I absolutely loved them, especially Mary! But one of the family members isn’t to keen on the idea of a stranger living in his house; her grandfather’s dad, Dean; the man that went missing over sixty years ago.

Oh my gosh, you guys!! Dean was SO sexy. (Keep in mind he’s mid-twenties when we meet him, not an oldie!) He was arrogant and harsh but totally loveable on about 364 different levels. He was such the army bad boy type. *Sighs* Yes, I liked him very much. It was also cute to see her grandfather as a little boy! He idolized Dean so much and it was extremely cute!

So any who, while Lydia is in the past she decides she’s going to fix whatever happened 60+ years ago and stop Dean from disappearing. Only problem? A boy has followed her into the past and he’s determined to prevent her from changing anything. Whatever Lydia does in the past could severely alter her future, and Wes wants to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Oh my sweet, complicated, emotionally scarred Wes, you are the epitome of what I want my boyfriend to be. Please love me? Ehem… i mean...Wes is very levelheaded. He tries to convince Lydia to go back to her time multiple times but she won’t budge. Finally he gives in and decides he’ll help her in anyway he can. Granted Lydia wasn’t 100% honest with Wes at times, but her intentions were good; she was trying to help her family.

So, Lydia and Wes have to race to find a solution for Dean disappearing without gaining the attention of the leaders of the Montauk Project. TALK ABOUT INTESNSE. AND AWESOME. AND INTENSE.

I seriously canNOT wait to find out what’s going to happen next after that INSANE ending! How the hell are Wes and Lydia going to end up together?! WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO *&^$%@!?

Overall, So Close to You was a suspenseful time travel romance that should not be missed!

But then a tragic misstep shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a future. Darkness Before Dawn by J.A. London

Darkness Before Dawn
Darkness Before Dawn
Author: J.A. London
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishing
Pages: 342
Team: Victor
Rating: 4 Stars
This electrifying new trilogy blends the best of paranormal and dystopian storytelling in a world where the war is over. And the vampires won.

Humans huddle in their walled cities, supplying blood in exchange for safety. But not even that is guaranteed. Dawn has lost her entire family and now reluctantly serves as the delegate to Lord Valentine, the most powerful vampire for miles. It isn’t until she meets Victor, Valentine’s son, that she realizes not all vampires are monsters....

Darkness Before Dawn is a fresh new story with captivating characters, unexpected plot twists, a fascinating setting, and a compelling voice. Written under the name J. A. London by a talented mother-son team, the trilogy is perfect for fans of True Blood and the House of Night and Morganville Vampires series.~Goodreads
I had high hopes for this book. Being a reader who’s over vampires, I needed this book to wow me, dazzle me and not irritate me. Darkness Before Dawn did not disappoint! I was actually surprised at how good it was!

I really liked the writing style in this one. It wove simplistic descriptions with beautiful imagery and I thought the whole book read like a movie. Or at least it did for me! I saw everything play out perfectly in my head.

As for the main character, Dawn, I was actually quite fond of her! She was smart, determined and not afraid to stand up for herself. Following her parents death, she became the youngest delegate to represent both the vampires and the humans in the city where she lives, so those traits are definitely handy! The only thing I didn’t like about Dawn? The people she hung around with; her boyfriend Michael being one of them.

Michael was too perfect for me. Dawn mentioned over and over how perfect they were for each other but I felt nothing between them. They had more of a sibling vibe going on. Also, he was kind of an ass. He wasn’t that supportive of Dawn, and he was more concerned about what a good vamp killer he’d be once he became a Night Watchman. Ugh. I felt that he was too wrapped up in himself. I did not fall for his ‘charms.’

I really wasn’t impressed with Dawn’s best friend, Tegan, either. She was bossy and irresponsible; she really only led Dawn into trouble. I didn’t click with her as a character. But, one good thing about Tegan’s recklessness? It led to Victor!

Oh my gosh *swoon* I love him. So much. He is sexy and charming and protective and intelligent. Oh yeah, and vampire. And once Dawn found that fact out she never missed a chance to tell Victor how much she despised him; but he was not deterred. He wanted to help her lessen the strain between the vampires and the humans; he insisted that they could work together.

So, the more Dawn and Victor spend time together the more she learns about him. Victor does a lot of things to help the citizens of her city and Dawn comes to understand that not all vampires are monsters, especially not Victor. Could she perhaps be falling for this creature of the night? She sure is!

Now, Victor and Dawn....they have CHEMISTRY!! The forbidden-ness of their relationship!? Holy wowza. It was fantastic! But just when things start heating up between them BAM! The end. Oh my Lord Valentine! What the HELL!? How could it end there!? EEEP! That ending was like, whoa.

Overall, Darkness Before Dawn was a really good read! If you’re looking for a book that puts a new spin of vampire/human relationships and one that has a dash of delightful romance, then this book is for you!

For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund

For Darkness Shows the Stars
For Darkness Shows the Stars
Author: Diana Peterfreund
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Pages: 398
Rating: 5 Incredibly Stunning Stars!
Generations ago, a genetic experiment gone wrong—the Reduction—decimated humanity, giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology.

Elliot North has always known her place in this world. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. Since then the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress, and Elliot’s estate is foundering, forcing her to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth—an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliot wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she let him go.

But Elliot soon discovers her old friend carries a secret—one that could change their society . . . or bring it to its knees. And again, she’s faced with a choice: cling to what she’s been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she’s ever loved, even if she’s lost him forever.~Goodreads
Having never read the original story by Jane Austen, I feel as though I was able to come into this story with a fresh pair of eyes and no preconceived notions. This book was so gorgeously brilliant and it makes me want to pick up the original!

For Darkness Shows the Stars is a beautiful story about struggle, class difference, heartbreak, changing your circumstances and love. It was so spectacularly written; with the book set up in present tense through narrative and past tense through letters the whole story was intense, heart-wrenching and incredible.

The characters themselves were fantastic as well, especially Elliot. Elliot was remarkable. She’s incredibly smart and she’s not afraid to push the boundaries of her role as a Luddite. She puts others needs before her own, dedicating her life to making sure that the people working on her estate are warm, feed and safe. She’s probably the least selfish character I’ve ever come across. She treats everyone with respect and kindness (even those she doesn’t necessarily like). She also has so much compassion for those she loves. I adored her relationship with her grandfather and Ro. Maybe it’s because both Ro and Elliot’s grandfather have trouble speaking and communicating, yet Elliot is so patient with them. So patient. I admired that about her.

Perhaps her patience is based on the fact that she’s been waiting four years for the boy she loves to return...and return he does...

Captain Malakai Wentforth. Do I even need to continue? His name alone had me swooning hardcore. When Kai shows back up on the North's Estate, Elliot doesn’t really know how to handle his presence, he's changed so much. He’s distant and aloof and almost ignores her completely. And then he becomes just plain rude, throwing a bunch of low blows Elliot’s way. Four years ago Kai asked Elliot to run away with him—to go see the world—and she couldn’t. To say this turned their relationship...sour...would be an understatement. Their relationship is now filled with tension and resentment and all of their emotions and feelings transcend through the pages. Even the tiniest bit of dialect between them had my heart surging! Oh man...just...GAH! I LOVED ALL OF Elliot and Kai’s scenes together!

For Darkness Shows the Stars has so many elements that should make it a classic in itself; a strong heroine, a segregated society, unrequited love and a life changing choice that has to be made. I highly recommend this book to anyone. I absolutely loved it!

One of my favorite scenes between Kai & Elliot:

“I said go away!”
“No, you said ‘get out.’ I’m out.”
Now go away.”
“No.”
For a second they were both fourteen again, bickering. Bantering. For another second, Elliot wished it could stay that way. But too many things had changed.

The Brides of Rollrock Island
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine! And this week i am waiting on:
On remote Rollrock Island, men go to sea to make their livings—and to catch their wives.

The witch Misskaella knows the way of drawing a girl from the heart of a seal, of luring the beauty out of the beast. And for a price a man may buy himself a lovely sea-wife. He may have and hold and keep her. And he will tell himself that he is her master. But from his first look into those wide, questioning, liquid eyes, he will be just as transformed as she. He will be equally ensnared. And the witch will have her true payment.

Margo Lanagan weaves an extraordinary tale of desire, despair, and transformation. With devastatingly beautiful prose, she reveals characters capable of unspeakable cruelty, but also unspoken love.~Goodreads
For some reason this just sounds absolutely fantastic to me. And, the cover is stunning. STUNNING! <3

The Vicious Deep by Zoraida Córdova

The Vicious Deep
The Vicious Deep
Author: Zoraida Córdova
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Pages: 384
Rating: 4 Stars
For Tristan Hart, everything changes with one crashing wave.

He was gone for three days. Sucked out to sea in a tidal wave and spit back ashore at Coney Island with no memory of what happened. Now his dreams are haunted by a terrifying silver mermaid with razor-sharp teeth.

His best friend Layla is convinced something is wrong. But how can he explain he can sense emotion like never before? How can he explain he’s heir to a kingdom he never knew existed? That he’s suddenly a pawn in a battle as ancient as the gods.

Something happened to him in those three days. He was claimed by the sea…and now it wants him back.~Goodreads
The Vicious Deep is an action packed mermaid tail tale with awesome characters, sweet lore and fantastical romance—a book any merm lover will covet!

At the start of the book we have lifeguard Tristan Hart at his post patrolling the ocean. We also have his best friend, Layla, on the same beach (she’s a lifeguard too!) with the girl Tristan kind of sort of cheated on. As if things couldn’t get any worse for the kid, a huge storm is about to hit and change everything for him....

Tristan may or may not be turning into a mermaid man. A dunk in the bathtub confirms, indeed, he’s part merm. Awesome right? Not so much for Tristan. He’s not just any merman, he’s the Prince of the Sea and has a lot of responsibilities that go along with the title.

I'm honestly not sure how I felt about Mr. Tristan Hart. He’s a charmer, slightly funny and a tad bit cute, okay—a lot of cute, but he’s also a tad too sarcastic, a smidge conceited and a player. Sometimes those boys are undeniably my favorite and sometimes...they’re not. Something about Tristan just didn't click with me. As I got farther into the book, I started to like him a little more though. Especially when he was with Layla. I think she tends to bring out the best in him! (Potential couple alert!)

But the characters I absolutely adored? Thalia and Ryan! They were SO. EFFIN. CUTE! OMG! MY HEART!! They made my heart SO HAPPY! Ryan is one of Tristan’s best friends and Thalia is Kurt’s (Tristan’s guard) sister. Her and Ryan weren’t together very long but oh my sea lord!!! I loved them! <3

Ehem....moving on! This book had some INSANE twists. (I’m talking about death twists...) twists that scared the shit out of me...I was seriously freakin’!

Overall, The Vicious Deep is a cool new merman story that you should definitely check out!

Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

Sweet Evil
Sweet Evil
Author: Wendy Higgins
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 464
Rating: 5 Seriously Sizzling Stars!
What if there were teens whose lives depended on being bad influences? This is life for sons and daughters of fallen angels in Sweet Evil.

Tenderhearted Southern girl, Anna Whitt, was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage, and her will-power is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

A cross-country trip to meet her father forces Anna to face the reality that hope and love are not options for her kind. When she confronts her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?~Goodreads
Sex. Drugs. And Rock & Roll. And Demons. And a love interest who’s extremely cocky. And an ending that will leave you panting for more—all of these can be found in Wendy Higgins amazing debut! This book totally had the potential to be crude and offensive but the way in which Wendy incorporated such risqué topics made Sweet Evil that much more intriguing and seductive!

The twist that Wendy put on her demons and Nephilim was so freakin’ incredible! I loved the concept of the demons representing the 7 deadly sins! And i adored the fact that their children, the Neph’s, had to coerce humans in to partaking in those sinful acts. (Yeah...i probably shouldn't admit that...but it was so mind-blowing and awesome!)

Enter Anna, a girl raised to believe she was normal...only, she doesn’t even believe that because she can see auras. (Which would be totally COOL!) Anyway, Anna and her best friend Jay (LOVED HIM! He was cute and lovable and hilarious!) go to a club at the beginning of the book and Anna runs into someone who will change her life forever. Dun dun duuunnn...

Kaidan Rowe –Drummer. Son of Lust. Sexiest bad boy to ever hit the pages of a young adult novel (wait...this was a young adult novel, right?! Some of the scenes were so incredibly tantalizing I was like, “WHOA.”) *THUD* Kaidan is a complete enigma and I fell in love with him the moment he was introduced. He was playing the drums so effin’ passionately and yeah...*fans self* Also, as if the boy wasn’t talented enough, he has some pretty mad knife throwing skillz. SO. HOT. Ehem...anywho! As Anna spends more time with Kaidan (ROAD TRIP!) he really starts to open up to her and reveal his more compassionate side. Their relationship? Holy heavens! Or...hell! It was the most adorable thing ever!  Anna and Kaidan shoot off sparks from the very first time they meet and I was rooting for them the whole time!

But, unfortunately, falling for the son of lust has its downfalls. His job description is less than ideal if you’re looking to have a relationship with him...which Anna was. That poor girl, it all goes down hill for her from there. Kaidan Rowe causes her tons of heartache and I felt super bad for her! Especially when he starts to act all distant? WAAH! My heart hurt. WHY CAN’T THEY JUST BE TOGETHER AND BE HAPPY AND KISS AND STUFF!?!

There was nothing ‘sweet’ about Sweet Evil’s ending. It left me hanging and I NEED THE SEQUEL NOWZ! The concept and characters were brilliant and I’m definitely looking forward to reading MOAR about Anna & Kaidan’s world! You should DEFINITELY pick up this amaztastic debut!

“You know the little voice in your head?” he asked. “The one humans like to call their ‘conscience’?” I nodded. “It’s actually the messages people are receiving from their guardian angels. You see, the demon spirits whisper thoughts into a person’s mind, and the demon thoughts battle it out with the human’s own feelings, along with the messages their guardian angels are trying to instill. The old cliché about a devil on one should and an angel on the other is not far off.”

Dangerous Boy by Mandy Hubbard

Dangerous Boy
Dangerous Boy
Author: Mandy Hubbard
Publisher: Razorbill
Rating: 3.5 Stars!
Harper’s new boyfriend Logan Townsend is everything she never knew she always wanted—tall, muscular, with tousled brown hair that falls effortlessly around his face. But what’s most exciting about Logan is that he’s exhilaratingly dangerous, and dating him allows Harper to say, “buh bye” to her good-girl past and “hello” to newfound adventure.

There’s only one problem with Harper’s otherwise heart-stopping romance: Logan’s twin brother Daemon. Harper knows he’s a bad seed, but she tries to look past his dark, icy stare and his chilling demeanor. After all, he and Logan are a package deal.

Then cow bones start appearing in people’s mailboxes, a flock of birds show up dead, and all of the cars in the senior parking lot are given flat tires—and covered with blood-red handprints. Logan insists that Daemon isn’t involved—sure, he’s had some trouble in the past, but they moved to Harper’s quiet northwest Washington town so that they could both start over.

Harper desperately wants to believe Logan, but the more he tries to protect his brother, the more she wonders what she isn’t being told. Now, Harper must unearth the hidden secrets of the mysterious Townsend brothers’ history if she and Logan are to have any hope of a future. But learning what brought Logan and Daemon to town won’t put just her heart in jeopardy... She’s playing with her life.~Goodreads

I enjoy Mandy Hubbard’s storytelling immensely. She knows how to pull a reader in, create tension and formulate a fantastic love interest. Dangerous Boy had each one of these elements and although I was expecting something a little different from this book, it was still a really good read!

I really liked the characters in this one, mostly Harper’s cousin Adam and their friend Brick. They were both super protective of Harper and acted like the big brothers. Adam also wasn’t afraid to put Harper in her place a few times, and I admired that about him.

As for Logan, I felt as though I was thrust into the middle of his and Harper’s relationship. I would’ve liked to know more about how they met and how they even started dating. He was a sweetheart though; super considerate of Harper and her feelings and fears. He even tried to help her over come them which was absolutely adorable to read about.

Dangerous Boy had a very creepy vibe to it as well. Especially after Harper meets Daemon, Logan’s twin brother. Harper shows up to their house and oh my gosh, basement scene!? Um, yikes! TOTALLY EFFIN’ SCARY! I felt on edge every time Harper and her friends went to go do something. Probably because Daemon seemed to always be causing trouble and he was seriously crazy.

I had an inkling as to what was going on but HOLY HELL! The twist was so freaky and messed up! Although, after the major plot point was revealed, the story ended rather abruptly. I felt that it was a bit rushed. Again, not what I was expecting, but a fitting ending for Harper’s tale I suppose.

If you want a quick, creepy read with a main character that likes to play detective...then I’d recommend this book to you!

Arise by Tara Hudson

Arise (Hereafter #2)
Arise (Hereafter #2)
Author: Tara Hudson
Publisher: Harper Collins
Pages: 404
Rating: 4.5 Stars!
Amelia—still caught between life and death—must fight for every moment of her relationship with the human boy Joshua. They can hardly even kiss without Amelia accidentally dematerializing. Looking for answers, they go to visit some of Joshua’s Seer relatives in New Orleans. But even in a city so famously steeped in the supernatural, Amelia ends up with more questions than answers…and becomes increasingly convinced that she and Joshua can never have a future together.Wandering through the French Quarter, Amelia meets other in-between ghosts, and begins to seriously consider joining them. And then she meets Gabrielle. Somehow, against impossible odds, Gaby has found a way to live a sort of half-life...a half-life for which Amelia would pay any price. Torn between two worlds, Amelia must choose carefully, before the evil spirits of the netherworld choose for her.~Goodreads

Opening sequence: Amelia. Joshua. Bed. Kissing. *swoon* With an amazing start like that the rest of the book has to be just as good, right? Right! With new characters, sinister spirits and a shocking plot twist there was never a dull moment in this installment!

One thing I really loved about this sequel was all the Joshua/Amelia couple time! They were so adorable and I loved their cute kissie banter moments! But not everything can be snowflakes and kissies all the time, right? Right.

Through-out the book Amelia really struggles with the fact that she’s a ghost and Joshua is...you know....not. And ever since they have been together Joshua has slowly secluded himself from almost everything including friends, school, hobbies, and even his family. This, however, doesn’t bug him in the slightest because he’s completely in love with her. But a life of seclusion isn’t something Amelia wants for him. And since receiving a cryptic message from Eli's spirit at High Bridge, Amelia's been acting a little different herself.

Enter Joshua’s cousins and a couple of their friends. These guys and gals just so happen to be Seers who know about Amelia and can, get this, interact with her! The proclaimed leader of the group, Alex, insists on gaining her trust and is always poppin’ up when she least expects him to. For about three point five pages I was scared this story would develop into a love triangle because Alex was actually super sweet and really considerate at first! But, Amelia loves Joshua WAY too much to even consider anyone else. THANK HEAVENS! *wipes sweat from brow*

However, Amelia is still keeping herself at a distance from Joshua- trying to protect him from what Eli told her. But Joshua doesn't know the reason, so to solve whatever’s bothering her, he takes her to a voodoo expert/priestess lady. He’s hoping this will help, only the voodoo expert/priestess lady kicks them out pretty darn quick and right into the hands of another lost spirit.(But not, like, literally because the spirit, Gaby, can’t catch anything in her hands– a sucky side effect of being a ghost.)

Anyway, Gaby agrees to help Joshua and Amelia sort out their issues by doing a seance of sorts. And she means well, she really does, but she ends up doing the one thing Amelia, Joshua and even myself never saw coming. Dun dun duuuun...

With a relationship on the rocks, dark spirits on the hunt and a crazy plot twist that may just hurt your heart, Arise is sure to blow you away!  An awesome sequel that I’d definitely encourage you to pick up!
"When you had a ghost for a girlfriend, you eventually had to choose between the living and the dead. Between a normal life and a haunted one."

But as Wren explores her simmering powers, Gabriel starts to grow wary, telling her the risks are too high. And by the time she realizes he may be right, it could be too late to bring him back to her side.
